Ontario's Plan to Regulate Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Boosts Career Interest Amongst Students
Toronto, Ontario.

The Province of Ontario is close to introducing legislation that would see Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (TCMA) regulated under new Ministry of Health and Long Term Care legislation. A commitment made by the Ontario Liberals during the 2003 election campaign, the announcement is expected during the fall session of provincial parliament.

Ontario will be following in the footsteps of some of its provincial counterparts. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec took steps to regulate TCMA in the 1990's. These provinces require Chinese Medicine and/or Acupuncture practitioners meet specified licensing requirements in order to practice in their respective provinces. While some practitioners take it upon themselves to license outside the province, there is no such requirement for TCMA practitioners in Ontario thereby placing the public at potential risk.

This legislation is predicted to spark growth in the field of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture resulting in a higher demand for qualified TCMA practitioners. Some academic institutions which train doctors of TCM and acupuncture are preparing for an increased enrolment. "We are extremely pleased about the impending legislation." comments Dr. Mary X Wu of The Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM). "It will provide more career opportunities in TCM. But first and foremost it will address our ongoing concerns for the health and safety of the public".

Some schools across Ontario are already training practitioners in preparation of this legislation, with many graduates licensed through colleges in the United States. Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine is CURRENTLY attending university career fairs across the province promoting TCMA as an emerging profession for Canadians.
