Course Name: Herbal Medicine III

Course Description: The art of Chinese herbal medicine is based on the practitioner’s competence in combining a variety of herbs into a well-balanced and harmonious formula specifically tailored to the individual condition of a patient. In this course, students are introduced to the relationship of formulas to differentiation and treatment principles, and principles of creating herbal formulas, the dosage forms, preparation and administration of Chinese herbal formulas. Classical and well recognized formulae discussed in this course include formulae releasing exterior, purging, harmonizing, heat clearing, interior warming and tonifying formulae. Students learn the name, source, composition and dosage, preparation and administration, action and indication, analysis, caution and contraindication of each formula. Modification and important variations of formulae may also be included.
