Course Description: This course offers a general introduction to Chinese herbal medicine and covers the category of herbs releasing exterior, herbs clearing heat, purgative herbs, aromatic herbs for resolving dampness, herbs inducing diuretics and excreting dampness, and herbs for warming the interior, food stagnation removing herbs, and parasites expelling herbs. It presents the history and development of Chinese herbal medicine, the preparation, dosage range, relevant combinations, traditional incompatibilities and a comprehensive overview of the theory of herb categories in TCM pharmacopoeia. Students study the names (Chinese pinyin, Latin and common English names), entering channels, tastes, property, functions and indications, cautions and contraindications and dosage range of each herb. Physical identification of herbs is introduced.
