Questions for:
- Can I start practice right after I graduate?
- Do I have to take licensing exams before I start practicing?
- Do I have to take the American NCCAOM exam?
1. Can I start practice right after I graduate?
This depends on where you practice. You can practice acupuncture/TCM in Ontario and most of the provinces in Canada without licence at the present because the profession is not regulated. You will have to have a licence to practice when it is regulated.
You must be licenced if you practice in BC, Alberta or Quebec. Our Acupuncture Diploma will qualify you to take their exams and our excellent teaching quality will guarantee your licensure. Our diploma programs qualify for the examinations for all the titles in British Columbia.
You have to be licensed by the regulatory bodies if you plan to practice in the United States where acupuncture is regulated. NCCAOM (The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) certification is accepted by more than 30 states as the requirement for licensing. The Diploma programs offered at the TSTCM meet the eligibility of NCCAOM and our graduates have all passed the exams and are now certified by NCCAOM for both acupuncture and Chinese herbology.
We believe that our educational standard will meet the requirement when acupuncture/TCM is regulated in Ontario! You will be qualified for licensing!

2. Do I have to take licensing exams before I start practicing?
Yes if you practice in a province or state where the profession is regulated. There is no examination and licensing required to practice acupuncture/TCM in Ontario at the present time because the government is still on its process to set down the educational standards.

3. Do I have to take the American NCCAOM exam?
NCCAOM certification is not required in Canada and you do not have to take it. However, NCCAOM is a well-recognized certification organization in the United States. The NCCAOM designation indicates your professional competence and credentials. As of 2003, there are only about 50 people in Canada currently holding NCCAOM certification, which gives an idea of its level of distinction. Before the regulation and standardization of the profession is established, qualified practitioners are difficult to recognize. NCCAOM certification will certainly provide additional qualification and credentials to you as a practitioner. The process of preparing and taking the examinations certainly brings you more knowledge and a high level of understanding regarding TCM, and which makes it a priceless experience.
