Frequently Asked Questions About Graduation:

Graduation

  1. Can I start practicing right after I graduate?
  2. Do I have to take licensing exams before I start practicing?
  3. Do I have to take the American NCCAOM exam?

1. Can I start practicing right after I graduate?
This depends on where you practice. You can practice acupuncture/TCM in Ontario and most other provinces in Canada (excluding British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec) without a license at the present time because the profession is not regulated in most places. You will have to have a license to practice in Ontario when regulation is complete.

You must be licenced to practice in B.C., Alberta or Quebec. Our comprehensive diploma programs are designed to qualify you to sit for these exams and our first-rate training will maximize your chances of passing.

You have to be licensed by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) if you plan to practice in the United States, where acupuncture is regulated. NCCAOM certification is accepted by more than 30 states as the gold-standard for licensing. The diploma programs offered at TSTCM will qualify you to sit for NCCAOM examinations, and all of our graduates who have taken the exams have passed and are now certified by NCCAOM for acupuncture, asian body work therapy, and/or Chinese herbology, depending on their course of study.

We are closely monitoring the regulation process in Ontario and will do everything we can to ensure that graduates are qualified to sit for Ontario licensing exams and have an excellent chance of passing.

2. Do I have to take licensing exams before I start practicing?
Yes, if you plan to practice in a province or state where the profession is regulated. There is no licensing required to practice acupuncture/TCM in Ontario at the present time, as the government is still in the process of setting regulations. However, it is reasonable to expect that the standards set in Ontario will be comparable to those set in British Columbia and the U.S.

3. Do I have to take the American NCCAOM exam?
NCCAOM certification is not required in Canada, and you do not have to be NCCAOM certified to practice here. However, NCCAOM is a well-recognized certification organization in the United States and can be an excellent indicator of your professional competence and credentials. You can find out more about NCCAOM here.
